The New York Liberty began their title defence with a 92-78 victory against the Las Vegas Aces. This triumph followed the raising of their 2024 championship banner at Barclays Center. Breanna Stewart was instrumental, scoring 25 points. Jonquel Jones, the 2024 Finals MVP, contributed significantly with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. The Liberty maintained a strong lead despite a third-quarter push from the Aces.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd exceeding 17,000 fans, New York held a 14-point advantage at half-time. Although Las Vegas attempted a comeback in the third quarter, the Liberty secured their win by dominating the fourth quarter with a score of 29-20. Aja Wilson was outstanding for Las Vegas, achieving 31 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.

Caitlin Clark achieved her third career triple-double as Indiana Fever defeated Chicago Sky with a score of 93-58. Clark started her sophomore WNBA season impressively with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Aliyah Boston also shone with 19 points and 13 rebounds. The game saw some tension when Clark fouled Angel Reese hard in the third quarter.
The altercation between Clark and Reese led to words being exchanged before they were separated. Clark's foul was later upgraded to a flagrant one. Despite this incident, Reese managed to contribute significantly with 12 points and 17 rebounds for Chicago Sky. Hailey Van Lith debuted professionally for Sky, scoring four points.
The revamped Phoenix Mercury team triumphed over Seattle Storm with an impressive scoreline of 81-59. Satou Sabally led Phoenix with an outstanding performance of 27 points and six rebounds. Alyssa Thomas added to the team's success by scoring 20 points along with seven rebounds and six assists.
Eight players made their debut for Mercury following significant offseason changes. Alexa Held contributed off the bench with 11 points and three assists while Alexis Prince led in rebounds from her reserve position with eight boards. For Seattle Storm, Skyler Diggins stood out by scoring 21 points on efficient shooting.
Despite Diggins' efforts, Seattle struggled overall as their remaining players shot just over 28% from the field collectively. This marked a challenging start for them against Phoenix's newly formed squad that showcased depth and cohesion early on in this season opener.
