LIC Sports meet: Final team championship events begin

Bhopal, Jan 9 (UNI) The finals of team championship events of carrom, badminton and table tennis on the third day of the LIC Sports Festival 2006-07 would be played here today.

In the badminton men's team championship, South Central Zone and West Zone entered into the final by defeating South Zone 3-0 and Eastern Zone 2-1 in their semi-finals matches yesterday.

In the position match for third and fourth place, East Zone emerged bronze medal winner by defeating South Zone 2-0.

In the women's category, West Zone defeated North Zone 2-0 and South Central Zone defeated South Zone 2-1 to reach final. In the position match, South Zone beat North Zone 2-0.

In the table tennis men's championship, North Central Zone beat hosts Central Zone 3-0 and East Zone defeated North Zone 3-0 in the semi-finals played yesterday. In the women's semi-final matches, East Zone defeated South Central Zone 3-1 and West Zone beat Central Zone 3-0, a press release said here today.

For the classification matches of both men and women team championship in Table Tennis, Central Zone bagged the third place defeating North Zone 3-1 and South Central Zone 3-1 respectively.

In the men's carrom team championship event, North Central Zone defeated South Central Zone 3-0 and West Zone beat East Zone 2-1 yesterday to secure a berth in the final.

In the women's category, South Central Zone beat East Zone 3-0 and South Zone defeated West Zone 3-0 to enter the final and make it an all South affair.

In the Chess team and individual events, all seeded players were leading the event at the end of the third day. In the women's category, South Central Zone (17) and West Zone (16) were frontrunners, while in the men's category, the North Central Zone (18.5) and has achieved a lead of five points over nearest rival South Central Zone (13.5).
