Lionel Messi breaks Pele's record with 76 goals

Barcelona, Nov 12: Lionel Messi has surpassed Brazilian legend Pele's record of 75 goals in a calendar year after scoring twice against Mallorca which took his goals tally to 76 in 2012.

Messi, 25, has scored 64 goals for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina this year. Only Germany legend Gerd Muller stands in Messi's way who had scored 85 back in 1972 while Pele had scored 75 in 1958.

Messi, favourite to win the FIFA Ballon D'Or, had previously scored 73 goals during the 2011-12 season for Barcelona, breaking the European club record of 67 goals set by Muller in 1972-73 season for Bayern Munich.

The Argentine sensation also broke the La Liga record of 50 goals last season and also the club record of 232 goals set by Cesar Rodriguez to become Barcelona's all-time leading scorer.

Messi requires 10 more goals until the end of next month to beat Muller's 85 goals in a calender year.
