By MyKhel Staff

In a landmark move that reshapes the financial landscape of American sports, the majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers has been sold in what is set to become the most expensive sale of a U.S. sports franchise to date.

The Buss family, who have held controlling ownership of the storied NBA team since 1979, have agreed to transfer majority control to billionaire financier Mark Walter, CEO of TWG Global.

How much Money will LA Lakers sell Cost?

The transaction, which is still in the finalisation stage, is reportedly valued at approximately $10 billion, which is around Rs 86,000 crore in Indian currency.

Once completed, it will eclipse the previous record set by the $6.1 billion sale of the Boston Celtics in March and the $6.05 billion deal for the NFL's Washington Commanders in 2023.

Walter, already a prominent figure in global sports ownership, currently holds a 20% stake in the Lakers, which he acquired in 2021. He also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the World Series last year, and has stakes in Chelsea Football Club and the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, slated to join the grid in 2026. A spokesperson confirmed his expanded role with the Lakers, stating he is "entering into an agreement to acquire additional interests" in the team.

What was the price of LA Lakers when Buss Family Bought?

The Lakers, one of the most recognizable sports brands worldwide, have enjoyed decades of dominance, winning 11 NBA titles under the Buss family's stewardship. Jerry Buss originally purchased the team, along with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and the Kia Forum, for just $67.5 million in 1979.

Ownership of the team was passed to his six children after his death in 2013, with Jeanie Buss serving as the team's governor. Under the sale agreement, she is expected to retain her position, ensuring continuity in leadership. The family's 66% stake required majority approval from the siblings before proceeding with the deal.

Magic Johnson, a Lakers legend and former part-owner, celebrated the news on social media, calling Walter a "visionary" who will "do right by the Lakers." His praise pointed to Walter's success with the Dodgers and his broader impact on the Los Angeles sports community.
