He Zi settled for silver in women's 3-metre springboard event at Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre on Sunday (August 14). But there was more to come than just the silver!
As she stood on the podium after accepting her medal, she was shocked to see her team-mate and boyfriend Qin Kai go down on one knee and unveil a box containing a diamond ring to propose to her.
And 25-year-old He Zi, at first, covered her eyes in disbelief but later said yes, much to the delight of Qin Kai. He was thrilled and celebrated closing his eyes and a fist pump.
Qin Kai placed the ring on He Zi's finger, also handed over a red rose and later the couple embraced, "CNN" reported.
Diver Qin Kai, 30, decided to propose to his girlfriend of 6 years in front of global audience and it worked.
"We've been dating for over six years," He Zi was quoted as saying in the media.
"I didn't know he would propose today and I didn't expect myself to marry myself out so early," she added.
She continued, "I saw him during the afternoon and he seemed to be memorising something, so I asked him 'what are you doing?' and he said he was singing.
"I've forgotten most of what he's said (during the proposal), but it's largely what you can expect like promises, but what touched me the most is that he said he was willing to be bullied by me for life."
Qin Kai had claimed a bronze in men's synchronised 3-metre springboard event in Rio. After his proposal was accepted, he flashed "thumbs up" sign to the fans.
This was not the first time that love blossomed in Rio Games. Last week, Brazilian woman rugby player - 25-year-old Isadora Cerullo was proposed by girlfriend Marjorie Enya, 28, at the Deodoro Stadium and they both got engaged.
Enya works as a manager at the stadium and at the end of the rugby sevens final between Australia and New Zealand, she went onto the pitch and announced her proposal to Cerullo, on a microphone.
"The Olympic Games can look like closure but, for me, it's starting a new life with someone. I wanted to show people that love wins," Enya told "BBC".
