Santiago Sees Clear Path to Final but Warns Lovlina Borgohain of Tough Test

India boxing head coach Santiago Nieva has expressed confidence in Lovlina Borgohain's chances of reaching the Commonwealth Games 2026 final but cautioned that the Olympic medallist cannot afford to underestimate her semi-final opponent, Tarona Taafaki of Tuvalu.

Lovlina has already secured at least a bronze medal after receiving a bye into the women's 75kg semi-finals due to the five-boxer draw.

Speaking to the Boxing Federation of India after the draw was confirmed, Santiago acknowledged that Lovlina had benefited from the tournament format but stressed that the job was far from over.

"We've received the draw, and in Lovlina's weight category there are five boxers. She has a favourable draw and will go directly into the semifinals, where she will face Tuvalu."

The Indian coach also revealed that Lovlina has previous experience against Taafaki through training camps.

"They have sparred before in Belfast, and we're confident that Lovlina is operating at a higher level."

However, Santiago warned that familiarity alone would not guarantee victory.

"That said, she's a tough opponent and a southpaw, so we need to be fully prepared and perform at our best."

England and Australia on opposite side

Santiago also pointed out that India's biggest title rivals are on the other side of the draw, potentially easing Lovlina's route to the final.

"On paper, our main rivals England and Australia are on the other side of the draw and will face each other in the semifinals."

Despite that, he insisted India would not take anything for granted.

"While the draw is favourable for us, achieving our goal will require us to beat whoever comes our way."

Lovlina Borgohain assured of first Commonwealth Games medal

Lovlina is guaranteed her maiden Commonwealth Games medal after advancing directly to the semi-finals, as both losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals in boxing.

The 28-year-old, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics and is a former world champion, will face Tarona Taafaki on July 31 for a place in the gold medal bout.

A medal in Glasgow will complete Lovlina's collection at major multi-sport events, having already won podium finishes at the Olympics and the Asian Games.
