The 2024 Paris Olympics have seen their fair share of drama, but none quite as splashy as the controversy surrounding Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso. Her Olympic adventure, which began with such promise, has made headlines for reasons far removed from the pool's edge.
Luana Alonso, a promising talent who made waves in the 100m butterfly, found her Olympic journey cut short, but not before making headlines for all the wrong reasons. After failing to advance beyond the preliminary heats, Luana's Olympic experience took a nosedive not just because of her performance but also due to her behaviour.

Reports emerged that her attire and interactions with fellow athletes were creating a stir in the Olympic Village. Dressed in what some deemed "skimpy" outfits, Luana was allegedly distracting her competitors and causing quite a kerfuffle among the camp. Adding fuel to the fire, Luana's decision to sneak out of the Olympic Village to visit Disneyland didn't sit well with the Paraguayan officials.
In a twist of fate, this personal excursion became the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. While athletes are allowed to stay in the village even after their events have concluded, Luana's escapade was seen as the last straw, leading to her being asked to leave. This incident was the final nail in the coffin for her stay at the Olympics, prompting a rather swift exit.
Larissa Schaerer, Paraguay's Olympic chief, confirmed the expulsion in a statement, saying, "Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay". Schaerer added that Luana's departure was her own decision, emphasizing, "We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the athletes' village."
In response, Luana Alonso took to Instagram to clear the air, firmly stating, "I just wanted to clarify that I was never kicked out or expelled from anywhere, please stop spreading false information. I don't want to make any statement but I'm not going to let lies affect me either."
Despite her attempts to set the record straight, the controversy surrounding her exit from the village continued to stir the pot. The drama didn't end there. Luana, at just 20 years old, announced her retirement from swimming with an emotional farewell on Instagram.
"I'm retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for the support!" she wrote. "Sorry Paraguay, I only have to thank you! I am very emotional because it was my last race. I have been swimming for so long, 18 years, and I have so many feelings."
Luana didn't hold back in her criticism of Paraguayan officials and teammates, accusing them of not "supporting" or "trusting" their athletes. She even hinted at a preference for representing the United States instead. During a live video on social media, she expressed a desire to represent the U.S., revealing a rift with her current team.
Amidst the turmoil, Luana did share glimpses of her time in Paris, including a notable meeting with tennis legend Rafael Nadal, offering a silver lining to her otherwise stormy Olympic journey.
