Luka Doncic is optimistic about the Los Angeles Lakers' chances in the upcoming season. The Slovenian star, who joined the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks in a major trade last February, recently signed a three-year contract extension worth $165 million. This deal includes a player option of $57.6 million for the final year, allowing Doncic to opt out before the 2028-29 season.
Last season, the Lakers secured the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs but were eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games during the first round. Since then, they have strengthened their roster by adding Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, both recruited by Doncic, along with Jake LaRavia. Doncic expressed confidence in their championship potential, stating, "We have what we need to compete for the championship."

Doncic is determined to win every game and believes that with new talent on board, they are ready to pursue a title. He shared his excitement on social media: "I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning."
The Lakers will also benefit from having LeBron James for another season as he opted into his contract's final year at age 40. Last season, James averaged 24.4 points on 51.3% shooting, alongside 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds. Entering his record-setting 23rd season, there is hope within the franchise that he might conclude his career with them.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka emphasized respecting James' decision regarding his playing future: "I think the number one thing we have to do there is respect he and his family's decision in terms of how long he's going to play," Pelinka said. "We want to respect his ability to come up with his timetable on that."
The combination of Doncic's leadership and new team additions positions the Lakers as strong contenders for next season's championship run while maintaining respect for veteran players like James who continue contributing significantly on court.
