Luka Doncic And JJ Redick Navigate Normal Heated Exchange As Lakers Moment

Lakers coach JJ Redick describes the heated interaction with Luka Doncic as a normal part of high-stakes competition. Despite the viral moment, Redick emphasises a strong relationship and focus on team performance, highlighting that public opinion often amplifies isolated exchanges. The incident underlines competitive tension in elite NBA games.

JJ Redick downplayed the viral touchline clash with Luka Doncic, stressing that the Los Angeles Lakers star and coach still share a strong working relationship. The incident gained attention on social media, yet Redick explained before a 110-101 win over the New Orleans Pelicans that both viewed the exchange as part of normal NBA competition.

On the court, Doncic continued to drive the Lakers’ response after a three-game slide. The team had entered the Golden State Warriors match on that poor run, yet Los Angeles recovered with three straight wins, sparked by consistent scoring from Doncic across the Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Pelicans games.

Luka Doncic and Redick clash viewed as normal

The confrontation that spread online occurred during the first quarter against the Warriors on Saturday, when the Lakers were already up comfortably. Doncic headed to the bench after being substituted and appeared to avoid a fist bump from Redick. The coach then walked after Doncic along the sideline, and the pair exchanged sharp words as Doncic sat.

Redick turned back towards half court, but the conversation continued. Doncic rose again and spoke further in Redick’s direction. Team-mate Jarred Vanderbilt stepped between them, applauding the Lakers while also placing a physical barrier in front of Doncic. Moments later, Doncic returned to his seat and the game moved on without any technical fouls.

Asked about the scene before facing the Pelicans on Tuesday, Redick insisted there was no lasting issue. Redick said: "I didn't think much of it at the time, to be honest with you. I don't think Luka did either. He and I have a great relationship. I really value our relationship. And I think those things happen. Not every game, but they happen very frequently. And sometimes you have to rehash them with a player, or as a teammate. Sometimes it happens player to player. It's a competition. And there are two guys here who, in this case, are trying to win a basketball game and be on the same page about stuff."

Redick also explained how he handles public reaction around such clips and why the Lakers role feels familiar. Redick said with a laugh: "It just feels normal, which is probably part of the reason I wanted to coach the Lakers. I was talking to Luka about it. We were actually laughing about it. I was like, 'I didn't feel any tension.' He was like, 'Nah, I didn't care about it.' You do it and you move on. I think the reality is, everybody is going to always have an opinion. Since pro sports have existed, everybody has always had an opinion. There's been sports talk, there's been barber shops, chat rooms. Everybody's had an opinion. Now, everybody's opinion is more easily accessible. It's just more amplified now, but it's normal."

JJ Redick and Luka Doncic impact on Lakers winning streak

Despite the Warriors flashpoint, Doncic’s performances anchored the Lakers’ turnaround. Against Golden State, Doncic delivered 26 points and eight assists, helping Los Angeles halt the three-game losing stretch. The next outing brought another victory versus the Sacramento Kings, where Doncic again led the scoring chart with 28 points.

Doncic then controlled the Pelicans match, recording 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists as the Lakers overturned a late deficit. LeBron James added 21 points, and Los Angeles survived 21 turnovers by closing with 14 unanswered points, ultimately finishing the contest on a 24-7 run led by Doncic and Austin Reaves.

Reaves endured a difficult shooting start, missing the first eight attempts from the field, yet recovered to post 15 points by the final buzzer. The strong closing stretch from Reaves and Doncic, combined with James’ steady scoring, helped shift attention back towards results, even as questions continued about the earlier sideline exchange between Redick and Doncic.

Doncic’s form across the three fixtures can be summarised as follows:

Redick and Doncic both indicated that their focus stays on winning and alignment on tactics, rather than on viral clips. The recent results, including the Pelicans comeback on Tuesday, suggest the Lakers group responds on court, while coach and star guard keep treating heated moments as routine parts of elite competition.
