Luka Dončić has secured his future with the Los Angeles Lakers by signing a three-year, $165 million contract extension. This agreement, reported by ESPN and confirmed by Dončić on social media, ensures he won't enter free agency after this season. "I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud," Dončić shared in a post on X.
Dončić's new deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season worth $57.6 million. Previously, he had a player option for 2026-27 under his five-year, $215 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks signed in 2021. The Slovenian star expressed gratitude towards the Lakers, teammates, and fans who have supported him since joining the team.

The 26-year-old was traded from the Mavericks to the Lakers in February, marking one of the most significant trades in NBA history. Anthony Davis moved to Dallas as part of this exchange. Following his arrival, Dončić helped propel the Lakers to secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs by averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists over 28 games.
Despite their strong performance during these games, where they achieved an 18-10 record, the Lakers were eliminated in five games by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first playoff round. Nevertheless, Dončić's contribution was pivotal for the team's success during that period.
Since being drafted third overall in 2018, Luka Dončić has emerged as one of basketball's elite players. Over seven seasons, he has averaged 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game—an unmatched feat for any player with over 400 games played. His standout season came in 2023-24 when he led the league with an average of 33.9 points per game.
Dončić also made history by leading all categories—points, rebounds, assists, and steals—in the playoffs while guiding Dallas to the NBA Finals that year. His exceptional skills on court have earned him recognition as one of basketball’s most influential figures today.
With LeBron James turning 41 this December and possibly nearing retirement, Dončić is poised to become the face of the Lakers franchise. Rob Pelinka praised him as "one of the game's most transcendent players" whose connection with fans is palpable at every match.
"Luka is an absolute killer on court," Pelinka stated while highlighting his generosity off it too—qualities that align perfectly with leading future championship pursuits for Los Angeles Lakers—a goal deeply ingrained within their legacy.
