Patrick Mahomes, a Kansas City Chiefs star and avid Dallas Mavericks supporter, expressed his surprise at Luka Doncic's recent trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. As Mahomes gears up to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, he was caught off guard by the Mavericks' decision to let their franchise player go. The Lakers confirmed Doncic's arrival, marking a significant moment in NBA history.
The trade involving Doncic also brought Anthony Davis, the Lakers' top scorer this season, to the Mavericks. Alongside Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick joined Dallas, while Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris moved to Los Angeles. Despite feeling puzzled by this move, Mahomes remains optimistic about the Mavericks' prospects without Doncic.

"Luka is such a franchise player," Mahomes remarked during Super Bowl opening night. "I know it hurt my heart as a Mavs fan, but I'm excited about the future and having [Anthony Davis]. It definitely hurts more than anything knowing Luka and the work that he put in and the time he's put in in Dallas and the city and how he's done so much for it. That's the thing that's hurt me the most. But I'm excited about the future of the Mavs as well."
Mahomes has been a frequent attendee at games held at American Airlines Centre. He voiced his disbelief over social media following the trade announcement on Sunday. "Wait what?" he posted on X regarding Doncic's departure, later adding, "I'm sick (right now)." Nevertheless, Mahomes affirmed his unwavering support for the Mavericks throughout this season.
"I know the Mavs have a great basketball team and getting Anthony Davis is going to help them," Mahomes stated. "I'll be there. I'm a Mavs fan through thick and thin."
Doncic spent six and a half seasons with Dallas before being traded. During his time there, he led them to two Western Conference finals and another major appearance within three years. Despite his departure, Mahomes is enthusiastic about both Doncic's future with LeBron James and what lies ahead for Dallas.
"I'm excited for Luka too and to get to learn under LeBron [James] and become even a better basketball player," Mahomes added.
The trade marks a new chapter for both teams involved. While fans like Mahomes may feel mixed emotions about losing Doncic, they remain hopeful about what Anthony Davis can bring to Dallas moving forward.
