Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve Addresses Team's Defensive Struggles In Loss To Atlanta Dream

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve critiques her team's defensive performance after a narrow loss to the Atlanta Dream. Despite strong individual efforts, the Lynx struggled to respond defensively, leading to their first home defeat this season.

Minnesota Lynx's head coach, Cheryl Reeve, expressed disappointment following her team's first home defeat of the season against the Atlanta Dream. The Lynx had maintained a perfect 14-0 record at Target Center until this 90-86 loss. Despite a valiant effort by Napheesa Collier, who scored 32 points and contributed significantly in other areas, the team fell short. Reeve noted that their defensive performance was lacking.

Brittney Griner led the charge for Atlanta with a season-high 22 points, helping the Dream improve to a 15-10 record. Jordin Canada added 18 points, while Shatori Walker-Kimbrough contributed 12 off the bench with flawless shooting. Griner's performance was consistent with her recent form, having scored in double digits in four of her last five games.

Reeve on Lynx's Defensive Challenges Against Dream

Reeve acknowledged that although Minnesota showed urgency towards the end of the game, it wasn't enough to change the outcome. "I guess it's one of those that we're supposed to be excited [about] because we started scrambling and having a sense of urgency," she said. "Yeah, we didn't lie down, but that doesn't mean a whole lot to us."

The Lynx struggled defensively and found it difficult to cope with Atlanta's physical play. Reeve highlighted that they were easy to play against in the first half and failed to handle pressure effectively. The team appeared dispirited when faced with challenges, which affected their overall performance.

Griner credited her teammates for her success on the court, stating, "My team-mates believe in me so much, I've got to give the credit to them for what I'm doing out there." Her humility reflects the strong team dynamics within Atlanta Dream.

Despite Collier's impressive stats—32 points on 14-for-18 shooting along with eight rebounds and seven assists—the Lynx couldn't overcome their defensive lapses. Reeve emphasized that merely showing resilience isn't sufficient without addressing fundamental issues.

As Minnesota reflects on this setback, they will need to focus on improving their defensive strategies and handling physicality better in future games. This loss serves as a learning opportunity for them to regroup and strengthen their approach moving forward.
