Made in India towels for players at 2015 Rugby World Cup in England

Bengaluru, Sep 23: It might take a very long time to see an Indian team at the Rugby World Cup but India's presence is already there at this year's mega event in the United Kingdom (UK).

The 2015 Rugby World Cup started on September 18 and there are 20 teams vying for top honours. The quadrennial showpiece tournament ends on October 31.

The players at Rugby World Cup are provided with Indian-made towels. These towels are manufactured in Gujarat in Vapi and Anjar. Welspun India Limited is the license holder of the Rugby World Cup 2015 towels.

"In 1993, the terry towel facility was set up at Vapi, Gujarat. Legend has it that no one could believe such superior quality towels could be made outside of Turkey," the company said on its website.

"Welspun has two top-of-the-line manufacturing facilities in Vapi & Anjar (Gujarat). These are Asia's largest, completely vertically integrated lines in farm- to-finish production across diverse products. Our manufacturing facilities score very high on the environment index as these are zero-discharge facilities with high water & energy efficiency.

"A part of US$ 3 billion Welspun Group, Welspun India Ltd. is among the top three home textile manufacturers in the world and the largest home textile company in Asia," it added.

This is not the first time Welspun's Gujarat-made towels are making their presence at a global sporting event. In 2006, the manufacturing of Wimbledon tennis tournament's towels was started by Welspun in Vapi.

"Around 20,000 units across the collection have been produced, while 2,500 units have been supplied for players and officials for use before and after the matches," according to "The Times of India".

"...designed and developed a capsule collection of beach towels, quick dry sports towels and blankets under Christy, a UK-based towel brand acquired by Welspun in 2006," the newspaper added.
