Mah fights back against Vadodara

Vadodara, Nov 29 (UNI) Lowly placed Maharashtra hit back to reduce star-studded Vadodara to 88 for 3 after being bowled out for 228 in their first innings on the opening of their Ranji Trophy super League match at the Motibaug Palace Ground here today.

Medium-pacers Samad Fallah (2/37) and Moondeep Mangela (1/32) ripped through the Vadodara top order claiming three quick wickets of Connor Williams (0), Satyajit Parab (16) and Rakesh Solanki (2) with only 24 runs on the board after six overs.

However, Azhar Bilakhia (batting 28) and Yusuf Pathan (batting 39) stemmed the top order collapse with an unbeaten 64-run partnership for the fourth wicket and took the score to 88 before umpires decided to call it a day 10 minutes before schedule due to bad light. Yusuf showed his batting prowess hitting 39 off 30 balls with seven boundaries.

Earlier, utilising the morning dew and the uneven bouncy track effectively, Irfan Pathan and Munaf Patel wrecked the Maharashtra batting line-up as skipper Connor Williams won the toss and put the visitors to bat first.

Spearheading the Vadodara attack along with Munaf (2/81), Irfan helped to dismiss Maharashtra for 228 at tea with a brilliant five-wicket haul, his second in the current season, even as Vadodara have picked up only 4 points from three matches so far. While Irfan had the major share of wickets (5/54), it was Munaf who is playing his first Ranji match for Vadodara this season, had began the demolition act by claiming the first two wickets of opener Harshad Khadiwale (7) and Ameya Shrikhande (8).

After Pathan and Munaf reduced the visitors to 76 for 5 in the 19th over, middle order batsman kedar Jadhav salvaged the side's innings with a magnificent 80 off 111 balls with ten boundaries and three sixes before being stumped by wicket keeper Pinal Shah off Rajesh Pawar (2/33). The tenth wicket partnership between Moondeep Mangela (21) and Wahid Sayeyed (unbeaten 27) produced a valuable 53 runs to help Maharashtra post 228.
