Maha Singh wins gold in long jump at Kila Raipur

Kila Raipur, Feb 3 (UNI) Seasoned campaigner Maha Singh (Sangrur) held the spotlight by winning the long jump title for men on the penultimate day of the 72nd Parle-G Kila Raipur Sports Festival, popularly known as Rural Olympics, at the Grewal Stadium here today.

The national thrower recorded 7.23 meteres for the top position.

Silver medalist Shamsher Pratap Singh from Jalandhar had to remain satisfied with the second position with a leap of 7.21, just .03 centimetre behind the leader. Bhupinder Singh of Patiala will take home bronze medal with a leap of 6.78 metres.

Anupama Shrivastva of Hoshiarpur ran a planned race to win gold medal in 800 meters race for women. Gurjit Virk of Sunam and Manpreet Bal of Jalandhar secured silver and bronze respectively.

Vishal Saxena of Patiala Railways was adjudged the fastest runner among men as he won the 100 metres dash with ease and pushed Saraj (Jalandhar) and Bhagwant Singh (Punjab Police) to second and third positions, respectively.

Jalandhar outserved and outspiked Mastuana Sahib by three sets to nil in the volleyball (shootingball) final for men.

The bullcok cart races left the spectators spell-bound.

There was loud cheers as three-time Olympic gold medalist Balbir Singh Senior, Padamshree Pargat Singh, Ashok, the son of hockey wizard Dhyanchand, Surjeet Gill (song writer), K S Aulakh (Vice Chancellor, Punjab Agriculturral University), Olympian athlete Manjit Kaur, Prabhjot Singh (Bureau Chief, The Tribune) were felicitated for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields.

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Ashok Gupta was the chief guest.

Brig Labh Singh, Dr Ajmer Singh (athletics), Sajjan Cheema, Kuldeep Singh, Suman Sharma (basketball), Balbir Singh (Railways), Chand Singh, Gundeep Kumar, Ramandeep Singh, Hardeep Singh, Arvind Chabra (hockey) and other top sports persons were present on the occasion.
