Maharastra's Prarthana wins Sunfeast crown U-14

Kolkata, Feb 1 (UNI) Top seed Prarthana Thombare of Maharshtra today won the Girls' Singles Under-14 crown as she defeated second seed Vaidehi Bhagwat, also of Maharashtra, 6-2, 6-7(2-7), 6-1 at the Sunfeast Junior Tennis Super series here.

Vinod Passi (Maharashtra) and Vinod Gowda (Karnataka), the top seeds, got the better of the second seed pair from Andhra Pradesh's Abhishek Alla and Y Sriman to clinch the Boys' Doubles U-14 title, defeating them 4-1,4-2.

Boys' Doubles U-16 tile went to S V Abhishek of Hyderabad and Arjun Kadhe of Maharshtra. They trounced the second seeded pair of Digvijay Singh Mehta of Himachal Pradesh and R Ramkumar of Tamil Nadu 5-3,5-3. If Abhishek wins the Boys' Singles U-16 tomorrow, he will go away with a double crown.

The Girls' Doubles U-14 title was won by Parminder Kaur of Chandigarh and Sai Samitha of Tamil Nadu. Parminder and Sai, the top seeds, beat unseeded Dhruti Venugopal of Karnataka and Swetha Sree Hari of Tamil Nadu 5-4 (7-4), 0-4, 4-2.

Girls' Doubles was won by the third seeds Prarthana Thombare of Maharashtra and Teertha Iska of Andhra Pradesh. They defeated Ankita Raina of Gujarat and Vaidehi Bhagwat of Maharashtra 1-4, 4-2, 4-1.

Prarthana thus has a double crown.

In the Boys' Singles U-14 semis, top seeded Himachal Pradesh lad Digvijay Singh Mehta beat fourth seed from Tamil Nadu R Ramkumar 6-3 and 6-1 to set up a title clash with Vinod Gowda, the fifth seed from Karnataka.

Vinod defeated sixth seeded Manab Kumar Chakma of Assam 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

In the Boys' Singles U-16 semis, unseeded Srikar Alla of Andhra Pradesh stunned top seeded Digvijay Singh Mehta 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

Srikar will now play statemate S V Abhishek, the second seed in the final.

S V Abhishek did not have to break sweat to beat unseeded Mumbai lad Haadin Bava 6-4, 6-1.

The Girls' Singles U-16 final will be played between top seed Ankita Raina of Gujarat and third seed Carol Augustine of Delhi.

Ankita dashed the triple crown hopes of Prarthana Thombare, defeating him 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, while Carol defeated second seeded Vaniya Dangwal of Delhi 6-1, 6-1.
