Manipur celebrates Nanao's victory in World Boxing Championship

Imphal, Nov 3 (UNI) People in Manipur are ecstatic over the excellent performance of Thokchom Nanao Singh, who got the gold medal in the AIBA World Youth Boxing Championships at Guadalajara city of Mexico on Saturday.

Nanao (18) had defeated Russia's Grigoriy Nikolaychuk 15-5 in the fly weight division and was the lone medalist of the country.

Sports Minister N Biren has assured assistance to the boxer.

People of Khoijuman Maning Leikai in Bishenpur district today celebrated the victory.

I Ibohalbi Singh, the local MLA, has announced Rs 50,000 as an encouragement in Nanao's pursuit for more glories.

Nanao also got the gold medal in the fifth Commonwealth Boxing Championship held in England in August 2007, gold in 41st Junior Youth National Boxing Championship at Nagpur in June 08, gold in the 44th Cuba International Olympic Games in July (2008) and gold in the recently concluded Commonwealth Youth Games, Pune.

The Indian team of seven boxers performed well in the World Championships by winning their preliminary bouts, however, it was only Nanao, who could manage to enter the medal round.

Nanao is expected to comeback tomorrow from Mexico.
