Manipur, Chattisgarh win handball championship

Imphal, Jun 3 (UNI) Manipur defeated Andhra Pradesh 17- 14 in the final of the 25th sub-junior girls National handball championship played here last evening.

In the 10th mini boys National handball championship, Chattisgarh defeated Haryana 35-25.

On the occassion Manipur Governor Dr S S Sidhu said, handball had been introduced in Olympic Games in 1936 as an 11 a-side outdoor game in Berlin Games.

''After World War-ll, the seven a-side indoor game became quite popular and this style of the game for men's was reintroduced to the Munich Olympic Games, 1972,'' he added.

The sports of men's and women's handball games have been an Olympic discipline since 1972 and 1976 respectively.

The National Handball Championships held this time here has provided a very good opportunity for healthy competition and generate bonhomie, team spirit, sportsmanship and fellow feeling and oneness among the participants, the Governor said.
