Imphal, Aug 7 (UNI) The case of weightlifter Laishram Monika Devi, who was reported to have tested positive in a doping test, has snowballed into a major issue, with the Weightlifting Association and Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh expressing concern over the way the process was carried out.
''Nothing can be done if the result is positive. However, if foul play is suspected, then a test should be conducted again,'' the Chief Minister said.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Manipur Weightlifting Association Sunil Elangbam also left for New Delhi to discuss the matter.
MP from Manipur Dr Thokchom Meinya has also written to Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs (Independent Charge) Dr M S Gill today, demanding a thorough probe and transparency in the matter.
''It is a humiliation to the sports fraternity,'' he said.
The MP said Monika was selected after two trials in Pune and Bangalore.
Meanwhile, Monika herself stated that foul play was suspected and reiterated that she had not taken any banned substance.
