Manipur sweeps all of nine golds in fencing
Guwahati, Feb 13 (UNI) Manipur made a mockery of fencing event at the 33rd National Games here by sweeping all the nine golds on offer in the discipline.
So complete was their domination of this event that of the 55 matches they have played, they just lost nine games in the entire schedule getting nine golds, two silver and one bronze.
Altogether the 20-member fencing team participated from Manipur and only a handful of them did not receive a medal and even that was because their own team members beat them.
''Traditionally we are strong in fencing and we have a culture also. So it was not surprising to see the results,'' said Romiyo Meitei Atom.
He himself bagged the silver in the men's foil but won the gold in the men's epee team event.
His younger brother Shaolin Meieti Atom got the gold in the Men's epee event. ''We will maintain the grip for years to come. No one can touch us,'' said an elated Atom.
