Manmohan calls for a boost for sports

By Staff

New Delhi, Jan 28: With the Beijing Olympics coming up later this year and the 2010 Commonwealth Games also coming closer, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today called for more emphasis on sports.

''I would also like to see our sports activities receiving a new boost. India must catch up with the world in the sporting arena, in all sporting disciplines,'' he said, in his address at the National Cadet Corps' (NCC) PM Rally here.

Dr Singh also said he desired the country's youth should ''seek adventure and test their limits, not just academically but in all spheres of one's personality development.'' India's record in the last few Olympics has not been particularly exemplary. In the last three instances, the country just managed a two medals -- a bronze for tennis player Leander Paes in Atlanta in 1996, a blank in 2000, and a silver in shooting for then Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in Athens, 2004. The country's performance in the Asian Games too has also not been very heartening.
