Manpreet Kaur heaves 4kg iron ball to record distance
Bangalore, June 1 (UNI) Punjab teenager Manpreet Kaur set up a new national record in the Girls' under-18 shot put while two new meet marks were created on the opening day of the Unitech Fourth National Youth Athletics Championship here tday.
Manpreet threw the iron ball to a distance of 14.35m to erase the last year record of 13.23m by Steffi Cardozo (Goa).
Saranya J of Kerala (11.26m) and Pinki Dey of Bengal (11.01m) finished on second and third place respectively.
Manpreet had recently won the senior title in the Federation Cup at Kolkata with 14.42m.
Haryana's Virender Kumar hurled the Javelin to a new record distance of 65 Metres to erase the previous mark of 63.46 m set up by his statemate Sandeep last year at Warangal.
Asian Junior finalist M R Poovamma (Karnataka) secured first place in Girls one lap race with a record timing of 54.7s( hand-time). Debashree Majumdar of West Bengal finished second with 56.7s while Jauna Murmu of Orissa grabbed third place.
Poovamma is India's best bet in the next year's Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune. Jumper S Aishwarya scored a double winning a gold each in long and high jump. After leaping 5.47m to bag gold in long jump, she cleared 1.58 m to win high jump title.
