By Meeth Agrawal

Manu Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by winning the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event, securing India's first medal of the games. Bhaker finished third with a total score of 221.7, marking a significant achievement in her career.

In a thrilling final, she shot a 10.1 in her penultimate attempt to jump into second place briefly, followed by a decisive 10.3 to clinch the bronze. This remarkable win not only underscores Bhaker’s exceptional talent but also highlights the complex and influential relationship she shares with her coach, Jaspal Rana.

The Rollercoaster Journey with Jaspal Rana

Jaspal Rana, an Arjuna Awardee and Dronacharya Awardee, is a prominent figure in Indian shooting. A four-time Asian Games gold medallist, Rana has been instrumental in shaping Manu Bhaker’s career. Under his tutelage, Bhaker experienced a golden period from 2018 to 2021, securing multiple ISSF World Cup medals and clinching the Commonwealth Games championship at Gold Coast 2018.

Despite their initial success, Bhaker and Rana’s relationship has seen its fair share of turmoil. The duo parted ways in 2021, just before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a decision that seemingly impacted Bhaker’s performance. Her campaign in Tokyo was marred by a pistol malfunction, leading to a disappointing outing. This setback was a stark contrast to her previous successes and marked a difficult phase in her career.

Struggles and a Bittersweet Reunion

Post-Tokyo, Bhaker faced a challenging period, grappling with form and mental health. In a candid interview, she revealed (via Rev Sportz), “I had lost interest in shooting last year, around May. I then reached out to Jaspal Sir, and we agreed to train together. I am thankful he is back to help me out in the journey.” This confession underscores the depth of her struggle and the pivotal role Rana played in her comeback.

Rana, acknowledging Bhaker’s initiative to mend their relationship, said (via Olympics.com), “The past is forgotten.” Their reunion in July 2023 was a turning point. With renewed vigor, Bhaker topped the Olympic trials for Paris 2024, setting the stage for her historic performance.

The Impact of Jaspal Rana

Rana’s influence on Bhaker extends beyond technical coaching. His experience and mentorship have been crucial in building her resilience and mental fortitude. The ability to bounce back from setbacks, as evidenced by Bhaker’s bronze medal at Paris 2024, is a testament to the strength of their partnership.

Their bittersweet relationship highlights the complexities of coach-athlete dynamics. It’s a story of professional highs and personal lows, of parting ways and finding common ground again. Bhaker’s decision to reconnect with Rana demonstrates her commitment to the sport and her belief in Rana’s guidance.
