Manu Bhaker Reacts After Khel Ratna Snub, Reveals 'Lapse' On Her Part Amid Controversy

Manu Bhaker, India's 2024 Paris Olympics star, has found herself amid a major controversy after being left out of the Khel Ratna awardees list.

On Tuesday evening, the 22-year-old admitted that there might have been an oversight on her end during the nomination process for this year's National Sports Awards.

The Khel Ratna is given to athletes who deliver outstanding performances. Manu Bhaker's omission, despite being the first Indian since independence to secure two Olympic medals in a single edition, has drawn criticism toward the Sports Ministry.

''Regarding the ongoing issue with my nomination for the prestigious Khel Ratna award, I would like to state that as an athlete, my role is to play and perform for my country. Awards and recognition keep me motivated but are not my goal," Manu addressed the issue on X.

"I believe there has been a lapse, possibly on my part, while filing for the nomination, which is being corrected. Irrespective of the award, I shall remain motivated to win more medals for my country. I kindly request everyone not to speculate on this matter," she further wrote.

Previously, Manu's father, Ramkishan Bhaker strongly criticized the Sports Ministry and the Selection Committee for failing to recognize her accomplishments despite of applying for the award following the norms. Her coach, Jaspal Rana, also expressed dissatisfaction, harshly condemning the Ministry.

The 12-member award selection committee is chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Justice V Ramasubraman. The panel includes notable former athletes, such as former women's hockey captain Rani Rampal, among others. As per ministry guidelines, athletes have the option to nominate themselves rather than depending on federations or other organizations. Additionally, the committee has the authority to review and select individuals who may not have submitted an application.

For those unaware, Manu Bhaker holds the distinction of being the first athlete from independent India to claim two medals in a single edition of the Olympics.

At the Paris Games, she secured bronze in both the 10m air pistol individual event and the 10m air pistol mixed team event, partnering with Sarabjot Singh.

Following the uproar, reports suggest that the Sports Ministry is reviewing the applications once again, and Manu Bhaker's name could potentially be included in the final list.
