‘I Will Go for Gold in LA 2028’ - Mariyappan Thangavelu Pledges After Third Consecutive Medal at Paralympics

By Triyasha Chatterjee

After making history at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Mariyappan Thangavelu stood tall with pride, reflecting on his extraordinary journey. The 28-year-old high jumper became the first Indian para-athlete to win medals at three consecutive Paralympic Games-gold in Rio 2016, silver in Tokyo 2020, and now, a hard-fought bronze in Paris.

In an exclusive interview with MyKhel, Mariyappan opened up about his emotions after the event. "I had worked very hard to win the gold in Paris," he said, his voice still brimming with determination.

"I don't know how I missed it this time, but I am happy with the bronze medal. Winning three Paralympic medals is something I'm really proud of." Despite his slight disappointment, his spirit was unshaken.

"I will surely participate in the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles, and I will work hard to win the gold medal there."

The journey to Paris was fueled by high hopes and intense preparation. Before the event, Mariyappan had met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I had promised him that I would return with the gold medal," Mariyappan recalled. "But now, I have only the bronze. Still, I am thankful for the opportunity and the support I received from everyone."

When asked about the people who stood by him, Mariyappan was quick to express his gratitude. "I really want to thank the Sports Ministry, the Paralympic Committee of India, and especially our Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and our Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

"Their support was invaluable, and it kept me motivated through my training. My coach, Satyanarayanan, has also been instrumental in guiding me. I am really thankful for all the encouragement I received from my family, friends, and the people of India."

Mariyappan's coach, Satyanarayanan, echoed his athlete's sentiments with pride. "Mariyappan trained very hard for this event. He narrowly missed the gold, but at least he secured the bronze medal," the coach said.

"I am so proud of Mariyappan for achieving a hat-trick of medals at the Paralympics. He has made history as the first Indian to do so. This is no small feat."

Satyanarayanan also highlighted Mariyappan's growing influence in Tamil Nadu. "The Tamil Nadu government gave him a Group 1 job. He's the first kind of athlete to receive this honor in the state.

"We are so grateful to the government for recognizing his efforts. Mariyappan has now become a role model for young athletes, and I am confident that he will inspire many others to follow in his footsteps. I believe he will win gold in Los Angeles 2028."

When asked about his plans moving forward, Mariyappan's focus was unwavering. "I will definitely participate in the next Paralympics," he said with resolve. "My training is already in motion, and I am making sure that I stay on track for Los Angeles. I will come back stronger, and my aim is clear-to bring home the gold medal for India."

For Mariyappan, the journey is far from over. "I've already spoken with Prime Minister Modi, and I shared my experience. He has been very supportive," Mariyappan revealed.

"When I speak with him next, I will tell him how much I appreciate the encouragement. Winning three medals in three Paralympics is a proud moment, but I'm still chasing my dream-gold in Los Angeles 2028."
