Mariyappan Thangavelu seeks compensation for the loss of his leg

Bengaluru, Sep 12: Even after having created history by achieving the gold in the Rio Paralympics, Mariyappan Thangavelu has not forgotten the dreadful incident, happened 15 years ago.

He was taken to hospital immediately and then a surgery was also made in his right leg. Still he could not save the leg.

Mariyappan's family had already moved to the court for the compensation in 2001 after the incident. And according to Mariyappan's mother Saroja, they received a paltry sum of Rs 50000 a couple of ago! Initially, the family wanted to refuse the amount.

But according to Mariyappan's one of the friends, poverty and dearth of adequate earning in the family forced Saroja to accept the amount.

But at the same time, even following requests made by state transport department Mariyappan has not yet withdrawn the compensation case.

And according to Satyanarayan, the coach of Mariyappan, Saroja does not want to withdraw the case. Rather she wants to continue and claim for more money in near future.

Satyanarayan also revealed that the personal secretary of Tamil Nadu chief minister had called him on Saturday, offering every kind of support and co-operation on behalf of the state government.

Still, Mariyappan cannot forget losing his right leg. Mariyappan also cannot forget the dismal scenario of his family where in only a small room in Salem his four family members struggle every day to stay. And that is why, according to his mentor and coach, Mariyappan now wants to revamp.

Satyanarayan however seems to be upset with the negligence on his another student Varun Bhati Singh who also earned a bronze in the Rio Paralympics high jump.

Satyanarayan lamented saying, “I am extremely surprised and upset that Uttar Pradesh government has not yet offered any incentive for Varun. He also deserves huge credit for having won the bronze."
