Mary Kom may leave Manipur if fear persists: Report

Bengaluru, June 12: Olympic medal-winning pugilist Mary Kom recently said that if problem persists in her home state of Manipur, she would have no other option but to leave it. [Attack on army convoy in Manipur: 20 personnel killed]

According to an Indian Express report, the 32-year-old boxer who have been crowned the world champion five times, said this in connection to the recent attack on a military convoy by militants in Manipur, which led to the death of 20 personnel.

The news left Mary Kom disturbed as it reignited memories of past violence. She was worried over her children's future, the report said.

The icon, who was practising in Bengaluru for next year's world championships which will also serve qualifiers for the Rio Olympics next year, said it is difficult to live in an atmosphere of constant fear. She said the situation had improved in the past few years but now it is the same again.

Asian Games bronze medal-winner Sarita Devi, who also hails from Manipur, said the news about attack on the military convoy was "disturbing". She said she would not like to see he children face the same problem as they had seen during their formative years.
