Masai Ujiri Departs As President Of Toronto Raptors After 13 Years Of Leadership

The Toronto Raptors have announced the departure of Masai Ujiri as president and vice chairman after a notable tenure. This transition comes amid upcoming changes in ownership and roster decisions.

The Toronto Raptors have announced the departure of Masai Ujiri, who served as president and vice chairman for 13 years. This decision follows the NBA Draft's conclusion and precedes the opening of the free agent signing window on Monday. Ujiri played a pivotal role in acquiring Kawhi Leonard, leading to the Raptors' sole NBA championship in 2019. His contract was nearing its end.

General manager Bobby Webster has received a contract extension and will collaborate with ownership on roster decisions during this transitional period. The team is expected to initiate a comprehensive search for a new president of basketball operations. Meanwhile, an ownership shift is anticipated, with Rogers Communications set to assume control from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment within the next year.

Masai Ujiri Leaves Toronto Raptors Role

Toronto's roster features Scottie Barnes as a key player, alongside several high-cost veterans. Brandon Ingram, acquired mid-season but yet to debut for Toronto, is contracted for approximately $120 million over three years. Immanuel Quickley is set to earn $130 million across four seasons. Additionally, R.J. Barrett and Jakob Poeltl have shorter contracts but together account for a $47.2 million cap hit in the upcoming season.

The Raptors are not expected to be active in free agency but have been linked to potential trades. They recently selected Collin Murray-Boyles with the ninth overall pick in the draft. Despite possessing a talented roster, recent performances have not met expectations, making this offseason crucial for the team's future direction.

Ujiri joined as general manager in 2013, leading Toronto to playoff appearances in his first seven seasons. However, recent years saw them miss the postseason four times out of five, with a combined record of 55-109 over two seasons. His leadership was instrumental in shaping the team’s success during his tenure.

The upcoming changes mark a significant period for the Raptors as they navigate leadership transitions and strategic decisions regarding their roster. The team aims to harness its talent effectively while managing financial commitments to achieve better results on the court.
