Matt Fitzpatrick has been striving to regain the form that led him to victory at the US Open in 2022. Last month, he secured a fourth-place finish at The Open, matching his best performance in a major tournament. He started the final round just one shot behind Scottie Scheffler, who eventually won. This marked a significant improvement after missing the cut at the Players Championship in March.
Fitzpatrick's journey hasn't been easy. He experienced a low point when he missed the cut with scores of 78 and 72 at the Players Championship. Reflecting on this period, he said, "I just didn't have it... There's no stone left unturned for me, but it's hard when you're intending to hit a shot and miss it by quite a lot." His confidence took a hit as he struggled to find consistency.

Despite these challenges, Fitzpatrick's hard work is beginning to yield results. Since tying for 40th place at the Masters, he has achieved five top-10 finishes. These include an eighth-place finish at May's US PGA at Quail Hollow and fourth place at the Scottish Open. He also secured eighth place at Wyndham last Sunday.
In pursuit of better performance, Fitzpatrick made some significant changes. He parted ways with his long-time coach Mike Walker and is now collaborating with Mark Blackburn. Additionally, he ended his partnership with caddie Billy Foster. Although these decisions were tough, Fitzpatrick believes they were necessary for his career progression.
Fitzpatrick expressed deep respect for Walker, stating, "My relationship with Mike is more important than golf really... At the same time, I wasn't playing well and things probably needed to change." This decision reflects his commitment to improving his game.
With only three events left before Ryder Cup qualification ends in September at Bethpage Black, Fitzpatrick hopes to make his fourth appearance. Currently ranked 12th in the standings, he may need a captain's pick from Luke Donald to secure his spot. Competitors like Matt Wallace and Viktor Hovland are ahead of him.
Rory McIlroy has already qualified for the Ryder Cup team. Fitzpatrick is eager to join him despite acknowledging past struggles: "Despite my record, I still want to be part of it to give myself a chance to improve on it." He emphasised learning from past slumps by addressing issues early.
The golfer recognises that catching problems early is crucial: "You can't afford to be behind the eight-ball... turn them round as quickly as you can." This mindset highlights his determination not to repeat past mistakes and maintain momentum moving forward.
