Matt Fitzpatrick Edges Scottie Scheffler In RBC Heritage Playoff To Claim Harbour Town Title
Matt Fitzpatrick moved to world number three after a tense victory at the RBC Heritage, edging Scottie Scheffler in a play-off. The win followed Fitzpatrick’s Valspar Championship success and continued a strong stretch of form against the game’s top players.
The English golfer secured a second RBC Heritage title in four years, holding firm after losing a four-shot cushion in the final round. A bogey on the 18th opened the door for Scheffler, but Fitzpatrick responded with a decisive birdie on the first extra hole.

Scheffler posted a closing 67, again producing a late charge similar to the Masters, where Rory McIlroy finished ahead. At Harbour Town, that score applied pressure on Fitzpatrick, who needed composure in the play-off to close out another PGA Tour trophy.
Reflecting on the achievement, Fitzpatrick underlined how much the event meant, especially given the opponent. "To win it twice means the world, Fitzpatrick told Sky Sports. To go toe-to-toe with Scottie and get over the line at the 73rd [hole] is special." Fitzpatrick stressed the quality required under the intense late pressure.
"I wanted to win that play-off so badly. To hit the shot that I did into a green that was like glass was awesome. [It took] A lot of grit. I felt like I got off to a great start. Poor three-putt on two. You felt like what could have been. But I would have taken it at the start. I knew Scottie was going to make a few birdies on the final stretch. I kind of had to hang in there a little bit."
For Scheffler, this marked a second straight runner-up finish, following the near miss at Augusta National. The world number one again produced strong weekend golf in South Carolina, yet felt earlier rounds left too much to recover.
"I think in both weeks I put myself behind the 8-ball going into the weekend and had really nice Saturdays and Sundays in order to get myself into contention, Scheffler said. On Sunday it's a shot here or there that makes a difference. This was one of those weeks where anytime Fitzy needed something to happen, he made something happen. He definitely earned the win, and he just played great golf."
The result highlighted Fitzpatrick’s ability to close under pressure and reinforced Scheffler’s consistency near the top of leaderboards. With two titles in quick succession, Fitzpatrick carried strong momentum into the rest of the season, while Scheffler remained firmly established as the leading player in the rankings.
