Dallas Mavericks Urged To Stay United After Four-game Slide Against The Philadelphia 76ers

The Dallas Mavericks dropped a fourth straight game despite Anthony Davis returning, as a 123-108 defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers raised more questions about form and focus. Cooper Flagg urged unity after the loss in Dallas, with the Mavs now 12-23 and struggling to regain rhythm from earlier in the season.

Flagg addressed the team’s slide and stressed the importance of belief in the game plan. "I think we just have to stay together, Flagg said. We have to come together and buy into our principles and get back to playing both sides of the ball at a really high level, and we'll be okay."

The recent run has seen Dallas lose six of seven, a sharp turn after winning six of eight earlier. The defeat against Philadelphia came even with Davis back from an adductor injury, as Davis finished with 13 points and eight rebounds but could not change the result at American Airlines Center.

Tyrese Maxey set the tone for the 76ers with 34 points, while Joel Embiid added 22 as Philadelphia moved to 18-14. Former Baylor guard V.J. Edgecombe, returning to Texas, delivered 23 points from the perimeter and in transition, giving the visitors another consistent scoring option throughout the matchup.

Max Christie led the Mavericks with 18 points, while Flagg added 12 in a quieter night. That total is Flagg’s lowest output since November, after reaching at least 20 points in seven of the previous nine games. The rookie’s efficiency also dipped, highlighting the effect of recent heavy minutes.

Flagg missed both of the three-point attempts taken and struggled at the free-throw line, making five-of-15. Head coach Jason Kidd pointed to fatigue from the festive schedule. "I think he's playing extremely well, Kidd said. He's probably a little tired, he's played a lot of minutes. This is the most minutes he's played in his career. I thought he found open team-mates tonight. We just didn't knock the shots down."

The contest also highlighted the ongoing rivalry between rookie guards Flagg and Edgecombe, who know each other well from previous battles. "I've got a lot of love for V.J. We have competed at a really high level against each other for three years now, Flagg said. There's a lot of love and respect there. He's a competitor and a winner at the highest level. I have a lot of respect for V.J. and what he's been able to do this year."

Dallas now quickly turns attention to an in-state trip to face the Houston Rockets on Saturday, seeking to halt the skid and rebuild confidence around Flagg and Davis. On the same day, the 76ers travel to meet the New York Knicks, looking to extend positive momentum gained from the win in Dallas.
