Nico Harrison, the general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, acknowledged underestimating Luka Doncic's significance to the team's supporters. The unexpected trade of Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, which brought Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick to Dallas, sparked outrage among fans. Chants demanding Harrison's dismissal became frequent at games.
Before their first home game post-trade, hundreds of fans protested outside the American Airlines Center. Despite a 116-105 victory over the Houston Rockets, Dallas faced challenges due to injuries to new addition Davis and star Kyrie Irving. This led to a slump after Doncic's departure. However, they managed to enter the play-in tournament.

The Mavericks secured a win against the Sacramento Kings with a score of 120-106 but were eliminated by the Memphis Grizzlies with an identical scoreline. At his season-ending press conference, Harrison expressed his surprise at Doncic's impact on fans: "I did know that Luka was important to the fanbase. I didn't quite know to what level."
Harrison also stated his readiness to move forward with the current team. He emphasised that he never spoke negatively about Doncic and is focused on future prospects for Dallas.
Starting as championship contenders for the 2024-25 season, Dallas faced an injury crisis that nearly left them below NBA player guidelines. Harrison prioritises getting key players healthy again. "Really, we just need to get healthy," he said. He believes their returning roster has championship potential.
Harrison is optimistic about Kyrie Irving's return next year post-recovery. He anticipates competing for a championship with a strong team. "We feel that's a championship-calibre team," he added, noting that winning would have eased fan discontent.
While Dallas' season concluded without a title run, Doncic continues his quest for success in Los Angeles. The Lakers trail 0-1 in their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves as Doncic aims for a championship win there.
