Max Verstappen Approaches Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Finale With Nothing To Lose And Confidence

Max Verstappen feels relaxed as he heads into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, aiming to close a 12-point gap to Lando Norris. With a strong second half of the season, he is ready for the challenge.

Max Verstappen approaches the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a calm mindset, aiming to close a 12-point gap to Lando Norris. He is on the verge of becoming only the second driver, after Michael Schumacher, to secure five consecutive Formula One titles. This follows an impressive comeback in the latter half of 2025.

After the Dutch Grand Prix in August, Verstappen was trailing Oscar Piastri by 104 points. However, he has since surged back into contention by winning five of the last eight races and consistently finishing on the podium, including his recent performance in Qatar.

Verstappen Confident Ahead of Abu Dhabi Finale

Verstappen expressed his relaxed attitude towards this weekend's race. "I'm very relaxed, nothing to lose," he said. He emphasized enjoying the season's second half and working with his team to overcome earlier challenges. "To me, everything here is just a bonus and sitting here fighting for the title," he added.

The Yas Marina Circuit holds special significance for Verstappen as it was where he won his first F1 title against Lewis Hamilton in 2021. He has achieved pole position and victory in four of the last five Abu Dhabi Grands Prix but lost to Norris last year.

This year's championship battle is notable as it's the first time since 2010 that more than two drivers have a chance at the title going into the final race. It's also only the 13th time this has happened in F1 history. Former Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won under similar circumstances 15 years ago.

If Verstappen wins, he will join an elite group of drivers who have clinched championships while starting the final race in second place. This list includes legends like John Surtees, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet, and Alain Prost.

Reflecting on his unexpected title contention alongside Norris and Piastri, Verstappen shared: "I also didn't really plan to be in the title fight till the end." His father is rallying in Africa while his mother enjoys watching from home with their dogs.

The season finale promises excitement as Verstappen aims for another accolade by potentially winning without having led before this race. Despite not planning to be in this position, he embraces it as an opportunity to enjoy racing without pressure.
