Mayweather is headed to MMA, says boxer's father

Mayweather recently teased about the possibility of him switching from the boxing to MMA in several posts via social media which has inevitably led to talk of a rematch with McGregor.

Bengaluru, February 21: Unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather's recenty activity suggest he is headed to MMA and may rematch UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, well that's what the boxing legend's father says.

Mayweather has recently teased about the possibility of him switching from the boxing ring to the Octagon in several posts via his Instagram and Twitter pages which has inevitably led to talk of a rematch with McGregor, who he defeated in a boxing match last August.

But, the UFC champ revealed he's no longer pursuing a rematch with Mayweather via instagram.

"I am happy for Floyd and his recent announcement that he is out of these current fight negotiations," he wrote on Instagram.

Mayweather too joined the Irishman and seemingly poured cold water on talk of a rematch with McGregor in the UFC last weekend during the NBA All-Star game, saying: "I already beat Conor."

However, his father claims the former five-weight champion's actions suggest he's preparing to move to MMA.

"The way I see it, I have to believe that this is where it's going," he told the Mayweather Boxing Channel (Express). "The way it looks, I think so.

"I don't know what the legacy is because as of now, he has enough money and he's got enough to live until his life runs out.

"I don't even know how to say it because there ain't no way to say it because everything is done right now. I wouldn't [advise him to fight in MMA].

"As his trainer, no, as his father, no. I want him to have all the money he's got. The money he's got, he's got enough money - look here, it's crazy money, man.

"He's his own man though, that's one thing about him."

The world of combat sports feel that Mayweather would find himself on the receiving end if he fought in the mixed martial arts premier promotion, UFC, but Mayweather Sr thinks otherwise and says his son has the skill set to cause a few upsets.

"I'm gonna tell you the truth about it, I think he can win a few fights but I think it's best to leave it alone," he said.

"You can do your own thing but you're in somebody else's playground now and holes and stuff are in there. You just can't do that.

"Don't get me wrong, I believe he can beat some fighters like the same as he did with the other guy but it ain't worth it.

"Anytime you've done what he's done, there ain't no other way he can go right now but backwards. That's the only way he can go right now."
