Rory McIlroy Shares Lead At DP World Tour Championship, Eyes Third Race To Dubai Title

Rory McIlroy made an impressive start at the DP World Tour Championship, sharing the lead after carding a five-under 67. He aims to secure his third consecutive Race to Dubai title.

Rory McIlroy began the DP World Tour Championship with an impressive performance, sharing the lead after the first round in Dubai. The Northern Irish golfer, who has won this event twice before, is ahead of Thriston Lawrence by 1,758 points. To secure the top spot in the season-long standings for a third consecutive year, McIlroy needs to finish at least 11th.

McIlroy's opening round saw him score a five-under 67, improving his initial mixed results on the front nine. He ended with six birdies and just one bogey. A remarkable long putt on the 17th hole highlighted his strong play, earning him a share of the early lead alongside Tyrrell Hatton. Hatton maintained his position by making par on the final hole.

McIlroy Leads at DP World Tour Championship

In an interview with Sky Sports after his round, McIlroy discussed whether media expectations affect him during major events. "Depends what day it is!" he remarked. "I think overall I have to take it as a compliment. It's a testament to the body of work that I've put in over the course of my 17 or 18-year career that I am held to such a high standard."

"And I want to live up to those standards too," McIlroy continued. "It's not just everyone else. I fully expect to turn up to tournaments and have a chance to win every time. I'm under no illusions that I'm not going to win every time."

The course presented challenges this year due to thicker rough compared to previous years. McIlroy noted, "I thought I did well [on Thursday]. The golf course is playing a little bit tougher than it has done in previous years with how thick the rough is." He managed crucial pars mid-round when some holes could have been problematic and finished strongly with birdies on holes 14 and 17.

Paul Waring, who recently won the Abu Dhabi Championship, trails by one shot in third place. Billy Horschel and Adam Scott are among those who scored three-under 69s. Meanwhile, Lawrence struggled on Thursday and sits six shots back after finishing one over par with a score of 73.

Reflecting on his performance this year, McIlroy said, "But with how many chances I've given myself, especially this year, it feels like I probably should've won a couple more times." He added that if he performs well over the next three days and secures a victory here, he will look back fondly on 2024.
