Undated (UNI) The unthinkable happened on a night when nothing went right for India, and everything clicked for Bangladesh.
Cricket has witnessed many such dramatic moments but it was an unforgettable outing that Rahul Dravid surely would like to forget as a bad dream.
We all talked of not taking Bangladesh lightly. It was said to be a weak combination but not short on motivation as youth power came to the forefront to haul the team into a position of strength in a group that has three Asian outfits facing each other.
That this was Bangladesh's fifth victory in one-day internationals against a team from the top eight makes me wonder why they did not win more frequently! When they beat Pakistan in 1999 they promised a lot but remained stagnant for some time. They gave indications of their capacity when they won against Australia and India too but this was one was really big, because it came on a big stage, and came very convincingly.
India's annihilation was complete. From the decision to bat, to the combination they chose and the manner in which they dealt with the situation showed the team in very poor light. They obviously played below potential and I would give lot of credit to Bangladesh.
They certainly were not the winnows in this match.
I was appalled to see the Indian batsmen in such a nervous state.
Too many dot balls meant the pressure was building all the time and the batsmen, without exception, really let the team down.
To begin with I fail to understand what prompted the team management to go in with seven batsmen. It was clear that Greg Chappell and Rahul Dravid had misread the pitch or else why would they keep the best bowler in the team on the bench? If Anil Kumble has been taken to the West Indies I can't accept him sitting out. He is your best bowler in all conditions. Believe me, a non-regular bowler can never command the respect that a regular bowler can and Bangladesh knew its task well. They just had to wait for the bad ball, and in this match, there were plenty as India's bowlers too failed to come to the rescue of Dravid and Chappell.
