Men, Women Chess team championship begins on Jan two: APCA

Visakhapatnam, Dec 31(UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chess Association(APCA) Organising Secretary K V N Sarma today said the 15th Asian Men Team Chess Championship and Fifth Asian Women Team Chess Championship would be held here from January two to 10.

Talking to newspersons here, he said teams from Afghanisthan, China, India-A and B, Iran, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, would participate in the men's championship. Afghanistan, China India-A and B, Iran, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, would participate in the women's event, he added.

Mr Sarma said the country that wins the men's event would qualify for the world team championship. The winner in the men's category would get 1000 US Dollars and in the women's event would receive 700 US Dollars.

He said India is the reigning champion in the men's section, while Phillippines and China were dominating the Asian Team Championships, held once in two years. In the last 14 championships in the men's section, Phillippines won six times, he added.

The Organising Secretary said in the women's championship, China, China-A and again China won the first three events, which began in 1995.
