Mendis will be a key for us against India: Jayawerdene

Karachi, Jul 5 (UNI) In a bid to retain their Asia Cup title, Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawerdene today said his side is counting heavily on spin sesation Ajantha Mendis to curb the in-form Indian batsmen when the two sides take on each other in the summit clash here tomorrow.

''Ajantha has the ability to come good in big matches and he is a key player for us. We are banking on him in the final,'' Jayawerdene said.

The Lankan skipper is very clear in his approach for tomorrow's crucial tie and said his bowlers will decide the fate of the match as they will have to bowl the Indians out if they have to defend their title.

''The Indian batsmen are in great form and to win the final we need to get them out,'' he said.

Indians are yet to see Mendis and in their last league match Sri Lankans decided to rest him. India won that match convincingly by six wickets.

But the decision of not exposing Mendis before the Indians was right or not would only be seen tomorrow in the final.

''Mendis is a good young bowler and it is good that he is playing with Muralitharan whose experience will help him a lot in a big match,'' Jayawardene said.

''We will play to our strengths and would look to execute our plans on the day,'' Jayawerdene added.

While the tournament has seen some huge scores which have been chased successfully, the Lankan skipper predicted another high-scoring match with the bat dominating the bowl.

''So far four pitches have been used in the tournament and all of them have produced some huge scores.

''I don't know which pitch will be used tomorrow, obviously there will be some wear and tear but I still I believe it will be a belter and a feast to batsmen.'' he said.
