George Russell has expressed concerns about his future at Mercedes due to uncertainties surrounding his contract. Although his current deal with the team expires at the end of 2025, reports suggest he is nearing a new multi-year agreement. Despite speculation linking him to other teams, Russell remains focused on his performance with Mercedes.
Russell's impressive season includes a victory at the Canadian Grand Prix and five podium finishes, placing him fourth in the drivers' championship. However, Mercedes has faced challenges this year, scoring only 220 points in 13 races. This marks their lowest average in the Hybrid Era, reminiscent of their 2012 performance.

The uncertainty over Russell's contract stems from Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff's interest in Max Verstappen. Verstappen recently confirmed his commitment to Red Bull for the 2026 season. Russell acknowledged that while his interests have aligned with the team's goals, recent months have been challenging.
"I mean, from my whole career until last year, the team have supported me so much and given me such amazing opportunities," Russell stated at the Hungaroring. He added that recent times have been unique due to misaligned interests but emphasized his focus on reducing risks through performance.
Despite Wolff's openness to exploring Verstappen as a potential signing, Russell remains committed to improving Mercedes' current performance. He trusts that as long as he performs well, the team will continue to support him. However, both he and teammate Kimi Antonelli have faced uncertainties regarding their future roles.
Russell's management agreement with Mercedes limits his options if he considers leaving. "They ultimately hold the cards because of the situation we find ourselves in with the management agreement," he explained. Yet, he remains confident about retaining his seat and is not worried about losing it this year.
Reflecting on past anxieties about securing a contract for 2026, Russell noted that he feels more assured now due to his strong performances. "Maybe 12 months ago, I was a bit more anxious and wanted to get something sorted or confirmed for 2026," he said. Now, he aims to enjoy an upcoming break without time pressure from either side.
As Russell prepares for the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, he remains focused on delivering strong performances for Mercedes. His dedication to improving both personally and as part of the team underscores his commitment despite ongoing contract discussions.
