Mercedes F1 2026 Season Starts Strong While Wolff Warns Of Political Knives

Mercedes open the 2026 Formula One campaign with a flawless start, led by wins from George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. As the team leads the constructors' standings, Toto Wolff cautions about potential off-track political challenges from rivals. The season has begun with strong performance and heightened scrutiny around evolving regulations.

Mercedes have opened the 2026 Formula One season with a strong lead, yet Toto Wolff is cautious. After two rounds in Australia and China, Mercedes top both championships, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli sharing Grand Prix wins. Russell’s sprint success in Shanghai also underlines Mercedes’ early advantage over Ferrari and Red Bull.

Wolff believes success on track will quickly trigger pressure away from it, especially around the 2026 rules. Wolff said, "We have a good car, at this stage, that is capable of winning," and added, "Let’s see what kind of political knives are going to come out in the next few weeks and months."

Mercedes F1 2026 Starts Strong, Wolff Warns

Mercedes have collected 98 points across the opening two weekends of 2026, giving the team a 31-point cushion over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have also started well for Ferrari, yet the Italian team still trail. Leclerc told Sky Sports F1 that, "Ferrari have a big gap to Mercedes, which is disappointing."

At Shanghai International Circuit, Russell’s sprint victory combined with strong race results strengthened this early control. Yet Wolff continues to stress that rivals, including Red Bull and Max Verstappen, are pushing hard politically against the new regulations. Wolff concluded that, "But at the moment, it’s a car that is capable of winning."

Kimi Antonelli’s breakthrough in China delivered a major storyline for the 2026 Formula One season. The Italian became Formula One’s youngest pole-sitter at 19 years and 201 days, then converted that starting position into a first Grand Prix victory. Antonelli is also the 16th Italian race winner, and the first since Giancarlo Fisichella in Malaysia in 2006.

Antonelli is contesting a second Formula One campaign after replacing seven-time world champion Hamilton at Mercedes. The debut season in 2025 brought mixed results and seventh place in the Drivers’ Championship. During the mid-season period, Wolff publicly criticised Antonelli’s form as underwhelming, and reports linked Mercedes with a possible move for Verstappen.

The 2026 opener in Australia exposed further pressure when Antonelli crashed during final practice. Mercedes repaired the damage in time for qualifying, allowing Antonelli to start on the front row and finish second in the race. That recovery drive, followed by victory in China, has eased many questions around Antonelli’s long-term place alongside Russell.

Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s response in Melbourne as a sign of growth. Wolff said, "When he went off on the Saturday morning, it was not like he carried the whole thing into the briefing," and continued, "He came in and said, 'That wasn’t good', but he kind of compartmentalised and said, 'OK, let’s move on'." Wolff added, "And then it wasn’t there any more."

Explaining the mindset demanded at the front of Formula One, Wolff added more detail on Antonelli’s approach. Wolff said, "This is a feature that I’ve seen with great sportspeople." Wolff added, "You make a mistake, you analyse it, you look at the data, you find your answers, and then you put it back, put it in a box." Wolff concluded, "And that’s what he’s doing."

Leclerc’s recent history at Suzuka adds another layer to Ferrari’s challenge in this Mercedes-led 2026 Formula One season. Leclerc has finished fourth in the last three races at the Japanese circuit, underlining consistent speed yet limited reward. That pattern mirrors Ferrari’s current position, close to Mercedes on race days but still chasing points.

As the 2026 calendar moves beyond the opening flyaway races, Mercedes enter the next phase leading both championships and facing growing scrutiny. Wolff’s expectation of political battles, Antonelli’s progress, and Ferrari’s pursuit, ensure the Mercedes 2026 Formula One season develops under constant competitive and regulatory pressure.
