Mercedes F1 Reliability Risks Derail Title Bid, Says Wolff

Mercedes’ Formula One title hopes are under threat, with Toto Wolff warning that repeat reliability failures will block any championship push. Wolff highlighted recent mechanical setbacks and stressed that, for Mercedes to challenge across a long season, both cars must finish races consistently and avoid further points losses.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, the Mercedes team principal downplayed championship expectations after another setback for Kimi Antonelli in Spain. Wolff said: "We can't compete for a championship if every second race we have a car that loses points. It's one then the other. To finish first, first you have to finish. That's just not good enough."

Mercedes F1 reliability risks derail title bid

Antonelli, who leads the drivers' standings, retired from the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix with a suspected power unit problem. Before stopping, Antonelli had just passed team-mate George Russell for second place. Russell had retired from the Canadian Grand Prix two races earlier after a battery failure while running strongly.

The reliability concerns hit Mercedes hard at a race won by Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who took victory in Barcelona for the seventh time, including wins at the previous Spanish Grand Prix venue. Russell finished second behind Hamilton, with McLaren's Lando Norris taking third place after a close strategic battle across the stints.

Despite the retirement in Spain, Antonelli still tops the drivers' championship, but Hamilton has reduced the gap to 41 points. In the constructors' standings, Ferrari have closed in and now sit 72 points behind Mercedes. Wolff accepts that any further DNFs could reshape both title fights over the remaining races.

Wolff detailed the scale of the recent damage to Mercedes’ campaign. "We can't DNF cars in a continued way, losing 25 points in the constructors' championship in Montreal and losing another 18 points on Sunday. We need to get on top of it and that's number one. So, nobody's happy about that and we will leave no stone unturned to understand it."

The team’s mixed emotions from Spain were reflected in Mercedes’ own review of the weekend.

The message underlined how performance remains strong, but reliability problems keep interrupting key weekends for the team.

The Formula One season now pauses for a two-week break before the Austrian Grand Prix later this month. Antonelli heads to Spielberg still on top of the standings after five straight wins before Barcelona, aiming to restart that run as Mercedes work urgently to stabilise reliability and protect both championships.
