Minister inaugurates Beijing Olympics Exhibition

Bangalore, Jan 29 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajasekharan inaugurated an exhibition of Beijing Olympics here today.

Speaking after inauguration, Mr Rajasekharan said, ''India was happy that its neighbouring country China was hosting the mega event and assured all help from the Government of India.'' The minister said China has received world acclamation in IT hardware and joined hands with India, which has attracted world attention in software. This would lead both the countries to become world leaders in IT Sector, he added.

He said about eight-lakh volunteers would make the Beijing Olympics in August successful and there would be more than 19,000 torch-bearers. The game would strengthen friendship among the countries in the world, he added.

As part of the promotional campaign for the Olympics, a three-day Photo Exhibition and Video display was organised by the Chinese Embassy in association with Indo-China Friendship Association, Karnataka.

The minister said the exhibition would provide an opportunity to gauge the efforts made by China to make the coveted event successful and it remains etched in the memory of people for a long time.

In his address China's New Delhi Ambassador Zhang Yan, said on July 13, 2001, the then International Olympic Committee President Samaranch announced the selection of Beijing for the 29th Olympics and the 1.3 billion Chinese people were delighted to hear the announcement.

Mr Zhang said the theme of the Beijing Olympics is ''one world, one dream''. The Chinese Government and its people would promote friendship among the people all over the world and would strive for a durable peace and development through sports.

He said the entire world would be associated with the Olympics.

India, would contribute to the event by hosting the Torch Relay in April. Both the countries are actively coordinating with each other to make the event successful, he added.

The Ambassador said China and India should also cooperate with each other for a common objective.
