Bengaluru, November 30: India's Mirabai Chanu made history at the World Weightlifting Championship on Thursday (November 30) becoming the second Indian after Karnam Malleswari to win a gold medal at the event.

She lifted a new National record of 194kg - 85 in snatch and 109 in clean & jerk - in women's 48kg category.

This is India's first medal at the World Championships since 1995, when Malleswari claimed gold in China.

Thailand's Thunya Sukcharoen finished in the second place having lifted a total of 193 kg while Colombia's Ana Iris Segura bagged bronze with a lift of 182 kg.
India's Sanjita Chanu finished fifth in her category.

"I owe a lot to my coach Vijay Sharma for this medal. We have worked really hard for this and hopefully, I will be able to replicate this in Tokyo in 2020," said Mirabai after winning the medal.

Some of the world's top weightlifting nations such as Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Azerbaijan are not taking part in the competition due to dope issues.
