Mizoram hosts 53rd National Games

Aizawl, Dec 11: The 53rd National School Games 2007 is in progress here.

Kickstarting the Games at AR Ground here yesterday, Mizoram school education minister R Lalthangliana welcomed the delegates from various parts of the country, and expressed his desire to witness a fair play during the game.

Asserting that national glory rests upon the unity and cooperation of the people, he appealed the sports persons and their managers to work together for the glory of the country.

He further highlighted that Mizoram, after twenty years of turbulence, has emerged as the most peaceful state in India, under which development is going in full speed.

In literacy, Mizoram has attained second position in the country, he reiterated.

Education principal secretary L Tochhawng and education director Malsawmthangi, who spoke at the opening ceremony, urged the delegates to understand the remoteness of Mizoram and inconveniences that they may face here, asking them not to hesitate to inform the concerned authorities for any such problems.

24 units from various states including three teams from Mizoram are participating in items like table tennis for under 14, 17 and 19 years (boys and girls), judo for under 14 and 17 years (boys and girls) and football for under 17 years (girls). The closing ceremony will be held on Saturday at the same venue.

The first national school games was held in May 1955 at Pachmary in Madhya Pradesh where seven states where participating. Mizoram also had earlier hosted the 30th National School Games winter meet hockey, volleyball, judo and badminton and 34th National Games badminton and table tennis in the years 1985 and 1992 respectively.
