Modi Govt announces Rs Five Lakh each for Irfan and Yusuf

Gandhinagar, Sep 26 (UNI) The Gujarat government today announced a cash award of Rs five lakh each to Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan for their impressive performance in the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup.

The Government has also decided to set up a fund for sportspersons and cash award would be given to those from Gujarat who excel at international level. The intial corpus for the fund was pegged at Rs one crore, a spokesperson of Chief Minister Narendra Modi's office told UNI.

Almost all state governments have announced rewards for players from their respective states.

Irfan and Yusuf Pathan were part of the Twenty20 cricket world cup squad, which landed today in Mumbai after winning the cup.

Irfan and Yusuf's father Mehmood Khan was quoted as saying in the media that ''in the past the government had made announcements to reward Irfan but nothing came. The Modi government doesn't want to do anything.'' Mehmood believes his sons have got what matters much more than cash prizes, which is the affection of the cricket-crazy fans.

''I hope they will play for India for a long time and serve the country,'' said Mehmood.
