Morgan''s World Cup participation in doubt

London, Feb 6 (PTI) England suffered another injury blowahead of the World Cup after explosive batsman Eoin Morganjoined the growing list of casualties with broken left middlefinger.

Morgan has been nursing a damaged hand for two matchesand scans yesterday revealed a fractured finger, castingserious doubts over his World Cup participation. He was alsoruled out of today''s seventh and final one-day internationalagainst Australia in Perth.

The 24-year-old batsman, who becomes the sixth member ofEngland''s 15-man World Cup squad to suffer a significantinjury, broke the middle finger of his left hand but playedtwo subsequent ODIs.

A final decision on Morgan''s participation in the WorldCup would be made once a specialist in Britain has assessedthe injury, ''The Guardian'' reported.

The other injured players of England''s squad namelyGraeme Swann (knee/back), Tim Bresnan (calf), Ajmal Shahzad(hamstring) and Paul Collingwood (back) have flown home earlyfrom an arduous three-month long Ashes tour, while StuartBroad is still recovering from an abdominal injury. ChrisTremlett, though not in the World Cup party, is considered animportant reserve and he has flown home early with a sidestrain.

"We have got six guys injured and if you look a littlefurther into some of the people on the field we have got somesignificant niggles that people are dealing with," saidEngland coach Andy Flower.

The statement from the England and Wales Cricket Boardread: "Eoin Morgan has been ruled out of the final one-dayinternational of the Commonwealth Bank Series in Perth with afracture of the distal phalanx in the middle finger of hisleft hand. Morgan initially felt some discomfort during theone-day international in Adelaide which has got progressivelyworse and an x-ray has revealed a fracture.

"Morgan will return to the UK and will see a specialistto determine the full extent of the injury and a treatment andrehabilitation schedule. A decision about his participation inthe World Cup will be made following the specialist''sassessment of the injury." PTI SHN
