By Meeth Agrawal

Paris Olympics 2024 silver medalist Neeraj Chopra recently shared his thoughts on his mother, Saroj Devi's heartfelt praise for Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who clinched the gold medal in the men's javelin throw.

Neeraj reflected on his mother's words with deep respect. "Whatever my mother says, she says it from her heart. The family members of athletes from each country pray for their victory," he remarked.

Neeraj also touched on the unique relationship between Indian and Pakistani athletes, emphasising that while political tensions might exist, the respect and camaraderie shared on the field remain strong.

"As sportspersons, we (India and Pakistan) have always been playing with each other, but what happens on the border is a completely different matter. We want things to be peaceful, but it is not in our hands," he added.

This exchange of admiration between the families of two fierce competitors has garnered widespread attention, showcasing how sports can bridge divides and bring people closer, even across borders. Both Neeraj and Arshad delivered outstanding performances in Paris, with Neeraj earning the silver with an impressive throw of 89.45m, while Arshad set a new Olympic record with a throw of 92.97m.

In addition to his reflections on the competition, Neeraj also voiced his hopes for the future of Indian sports, particularly the prospect of India hosting the Olympics in 2036.

"It will be good if the Olympics take place in India in 2036. It will be very good for Indian sports," Neeraj said, expressing his optimism about the impact such an event could have on the nation's sporting landscape.

He also acknowledged the growing enthusiasm for sports in India, noting how fans are increasingly dedicated to following events live.

"It is good that people watch our games live. They wake up early and sleep late just to watch our game. This is one of the signs that Indian sports has changed," Neeraj added. His comments underscore the transformative power of sports and the potential for India to rise as a global sporting hub.
