Mumbai, Karnataka enter quarters

Chennai, Jan 15 (UNI) Mumbai and Karnataka registered contrasting wins to move into the quarterfinals of the Under-19 Knock Out Cricket Tournament for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy here today.

While Mumbai squeaked past Vidarbha by a wafer-thin five run margin, Karnataka subdued Madhya Pradesh by seven wickets to make the grade.

In the quarters, Mumbai would take on Hyderabad and Karnataka would meet Punjab on January 17.

Electing to bat first Mumbai scored 223 for nine in 50 overs with Aditya Tare top scoring with 93 runs (123 balls, 10x4). He was ably supported by Sarvesh Damle 34 (51 balls, 1x4) and Sachin Vagh 27 (31 balls, 1x4, 1x6).

In reply, Vidarbha nearly pulled the rug under the feet of Mumbai before losing by five runs. Amit Paunikar (42, 56 balls, 1x6, 6x4), Oorvesh Patel (25) and Gaurv Upadhyaya 40 (36 balls, 5x4) kept Vidarbha in the hunt.

Mohd Karim, who took two wickets with his gentle off spinners, hit a pugnacious 41 (64 balls, 6x4), before his dismissal ended the hopes of Vidarbha, who were all out for 218 in 49.3 overs.

Requiring ten runs off the last over, Karim hit a boundary of the first ball. The second ball was a dot ball, before he was castled by offie Sachin Vag, who finished with two for 46.

In the other match, Madhya Pradesh scored 178 for seven in 50 overs and Karnataka overhauled the target reaching 180 for three in 45.1 overs. Openers Suraj Sampath (71, 91 balls, 8x4, 1x6) and Nitin Bille (66, retired hurt, 76 balls, 10x4) gave a solid start to fashion an easy win.

Bille retired due to cramps after adding 110 for the opening wicket in 21.5 overs.
