My objective is to win titles, says Lionel Messi

Barcelona, Jul 19: Barcelona star Lionel Messi said that winning titles is more important than individual records after his side failed to win the La Liga title despite his best-ever personal season.

UEFA Best Player in Europe Award: Messi, Ronaldo or Casillas

The Argentinean scored a stunning 73 goals as Barca won the Copa del Rey, World Club Cup and both European and Spanish Super Cups.

However, Barca couldn't manage to retain the La Liga title as rivals Real Madrid won the league after three seasons while European Champions Chelsea beat them in the Champions League semi-final.

Despite the failures in two important competitions, Messi believes he and the team can win the titles under new coach Tito Vilanova - Pep Guardiola's successor.

"What Tito Vilanova has done in these two days is exactly what Pep did in his four years. The same hard-working people remain, everything is equal and we start in the same way," Messi told Marca after the start of pre-season training.

Messi insisted that his main objective is not beat the level of scoring goals but to win titles for his side.

"I am not looking to beat my level of goals. This isn't my objective. My objective is to win titles and this for us is fundamental," he said.

The 25-year-old forward and three-time World Player of the Year admitted it will be difficult to match the level of scoring goals but their most important task is to reclaim the title from Real Madrid.

"Every year is difficult. Real Madrid won the league last year and this season will be very difficult. Our objective is to fight until the end. This year we will do the same," he said.

"I try to improve every year. I try to continue my level and continue growing with the team and the players we have. I always try to take advantage of the moment and I hope that this year will be the same and I won't have to lose any game," he added.

Messi hailed his forward partner David Villa who is recovering from a broken shin suffered back in December.

"We don't lack any forward with the players we have got. Villa is recuperating very well and we hope he will return to his best level. He is a very important footballer for us," Messi said.
