Nanao Singh enters 48 kg final; Sunil Sadhu, Neeraj fall by wayside

Pune, Oct 16 (UNI) Nanao Singh Thokchom kept India's hopes of a gold medal in the boxing ring alive entering the Light Flyweight (48 kg) category final today with a comprehensive victory over his Kenyan rival Eddi Nganga by 18 points to 2 in the semifinals, even as Sunil Sadhu in the Featherweight (57 kg) category and Neeraj Goyal in the 60 kg category bit the dust in the semis on the fifth day of the third edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games being played at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports city, Balewadi here.

Nanao will meet Zack Davies of Wales in the final. Zack beat Sinapapa Sanele of Samoa by 33 points to 0 to book his place in the final.

In the 57 kg category Sunil Sadhu, a boxer from Bhiwani, made famous by the trio of Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar and Vijender Kumar, went down fighting against James Dickens of England, after leading for three of the four rounds, on points nine to six.

Neeraj Goyal also met his match in Sean Duffy of Northern Ireland who ran out to be an easy winner at 14 points to 7.

However, Sunil Sadhu must be disappointed to lose after leading for three of the four rounds, he allowed his opponent to come at him in the last round and allowed him to get away with the match.

Sunil Sadhu started off with confidence, but it was Dickens who took a slender one point lead after the first round. The second round saw the Indian comeback at the Englishman to equal the match on points at 3-3 after winning the second round at 3 to 2.

The third round saw the Indian come out firing on all punches as he took a crucial two point lead in the penultimate round with the boxers moving into the last round with the Indian ahead by 5 points to 3.

However, in the final round, James Dickens caught Sunil off guard and punched his way into the final taking the last round at 6 points to 1 and thus winning a close match by nine points to six.

James Dickens will meet Ibrahim Balla of Australia after he had got the better of Jonathan Slowey of Scotland.
